SST x QSO

11182771_10153292695230522_5757178785021420544_oWe are shaping up for one of our coolest collaborations as part of this month’s upcoming QSOCurrent Festival in Brisbane, Australia. SST Composer Ryan Walsh, along with Brisbane -based visual artist Jaymis Loveday, are teaming up with Melbourne musician Tim Shiel and the Queensland Symphony Orchestra for a cinematic reworking of Tim’s soundtrack to the acclaimed iOS game DUET. Featuring (obviously) an orchestra, live electronics, orchestral manipulation and visuals based on DUET’s classy minimal aesthetic – this is one laptop crash away from a thrilling disaster.

Here’s a sneak peek of how it’s sounding and here Tim talk more about the show (and DUET) here. Tickets via QSO Website.

Told through the stories and memories of elders Roy McIvor (picured), Herbert Mclean and George Rosendale, “A War of Hope” recounts a dark chapter of Australian history that remains largely unknown. Premiering Anzac Day, April 25 on NITV. Check out the trailer here and a preview of some of the soundtrack here.

Polymorphous on ABC 1

The wraps are finally off some of the cool stuff we’ve been working on with the ABC over the last couple of months. First off the rank is our original score for “Polly Borland – Polymorphous” by SST composer Ryan Walsh.

Directed by Alex Chomicz (Half Mongrel, The Laundry) and produced by Filmfolk’s Meghan Carlsen (Full Catch, Coast to Kosciuszko, Made From Memory) for ABC TV, the documentary was created over a two year period, with contributions from not only the artist herself, but from a diverse range of internationally recognisable friends, celebrities, gallerists and family, including her husband and Director John Hillcoat (The Road, Lawless), friend and actress Cate Blanchett (Elizabeth, The Aviator) and legendary singer-songwriter Nick Cave.

Have a look behind the scenes during the recording of the score here. You can also listen to some of our favourite cues  from the project here.

From The Toolshed

In a previous update we mentioned the really interesting brief we got from Invision Media to create the soundtrack to the latest round of TV spots for Tyrepower.

Check out the SFX-only version of the track we built entirely from drills, spanners, tire balancers and various other sonically interesting machinery.

If you’re into this type of music/sound design crossover then you should definitely check out the work of Diego Stocco whose “Music From A Drycleaner” was an important inspiration in the development of this project (and convincing the client it was a good idea!).

Ozlotto National Campaign

Quite a coup for us this month with SST picking up the job to write music for GPYR’s new national Ozlotto campaign. The “road trip” concept of the spots as well the off-the-wall characters lent itself nicely to the super-charged banjo driven bluegrass stomper that emerged at the end of the creative process.

Watch the spot here. Or check out the track here.

In The Workshop

We were recently contracted by the guys at Invision Media to create an integrated music and sound design piece for their latest run of TVCs. After the initial brief we decided the best course of action would be spend a day in an actual Tyrepower workshop with their guys recording as many of the tools, machines and general “tyre” sounds as possible.Over the course of the day we created a rhythm track out of the various found sounds and added a few of our own more musical ones (tapping on spanners etc). It was all pieced together with a little bit of musical glue back in the studio and you can see the results in the finished spot here.
