The team at SST were recently privileged to work on the soundtrack to the upcoming feature documentary “A War of Hope”, with composer Ryan Walsh providing almost an hour of original music. “A War of Hope” tells the story of the forced removal, exile and eventual return of the Hopevale indigenous community to their homeland in North Queensland. Told through the stories and memories of elders Roy McIvor (picured), Herbert Mclean and George Rosendale, “A War of Hope” recounts a dark chapter of Australian history that remains largely unknown. Premiering Anzac Day, April 25 on NITV. Check out the trailer here and a preview of some of the soundtrack here.
To cap off a great (and super busy) year for SST, our head composer Ryan Walsh was lucky enough to come away with the APRA-AGSC Screen Music Award for Best Music for an Advertisement for his work on “Let It Shine (feat. MAY)” commissioned by Tourism & Events Queensland. The awards were presented on Dec. 1 at Sydney’s City Recital Hall and honoured the incredible depth and diversity of Australian screen music talent. Honorees included David Hirschfelder (taking out Feature Film Score of the Year for The Railway Man) and Cezary Skubiszewski (who scored a three awards including Best Music for A Television Series or Serial for ABC TV’s Serangoon Road).
Brisbane-based Ryan was the only Queensland composer to take out an award this year with SST also being the first music house outside Sydney or Melbourne to take home an APRA-AGSC Screen Music Award.

Great news this week with SST Composer Ryan Walsh being nominated for an APRA award for his score to Tourism & Events Queensland’s “Where Australia Shines” campaign. This is Ryan’s second nomination in two years having been recognised last year in the “Best Music for a Documentary” category for his original score to the ABC-TV documentary “Polly Borland – Polymorphous”.
SST Composer Ryan Walsh was luck enough to this month have the chance to conduct sessions at Fox Studios in Los Angeles as part of this year’s ASCAP Film Scoring Workshop. Writing for and conducting a 60-piece orchestra of some of Hollywood’s finest musicians in what is one of the most hallowed locations in film-scoring history: The 20th Century Fox – Alfred Newman Scoring Stage . The first independent Australian composer selected for this program, Ryan was asked to re-compose a section of Peter Jackson’s The Lovely Bones (originally scored by Brian Eno). SST were recently asked to reprise our role in creating a custom suite of of music for AirAsia to use internationally. Based on our original brand TVCs (shot by director Israel Rivera), we were asked to take a piece of music that was ethereal and atmospheric and turn into into something a little more “retail” for use across a number of media.
